Process of Reduction

In this work, I explore the interplay between solid and void, resulting from wanting to replicate my exploration into imploded steel forms in an unexpected medium. After attending Perth’s Stone Sculpture Symposium, organised by local sculptor Jina Lee, I was inspired to pick up the hammer and chisel and venture into the stone carving world. While my traditional practice of working with steel allows me to add and manipulate material at will, stone has demanded a more nuanced and restrained approach. Rather than adding material, I have had to rely on reduction, carving away at the stone until I reveal the form hidden within.
